Poha or Flattened rice (also called beaten rice) is an rice which is flattened into flat light dry flakes. These flakes of rice swell when added to liquid, whether hot or cold, as they absorb water, milk or any other liquids. The thicknesses of these flakes vary between almost translucently thin (the more expensive varieties) to nearly four times thicker than a normal rice grain.
It can be reconstituted with hot water to make a porridge or paste, depending on the proportion of water added. It can be also eaten raw by mixing with jaggery.
This can be used as a convenience food as it can eaten in any form after soaking in water for sometimes.
This is an easy and quick option for breakfast , you can add some veggies to this give it a little twist.
- Poha (flattened rice) 1 Bowl
- Onion, Chili, Ginger , Garlic and Tomato -finely chopped
- Spices-Turmeric, Cumin Powder, Coriander powder
- Curry leaves
- Mustard Seeds
- Refined oil to Cook
- salt to Taste
This will Serve 2 People.
In a deep pan – Add mustard seeds to the heated oil and let it crackle
Add chopped onion, ginger, garlic, chilli and curry leaves till this gets translucent
Add dry spices and cook for 2 minutes
Add chopped tomato and let it cook for 2 minutes.Add salt now.
In the meantime or you can do this before also – fry some peanuts and keep them aside
Soak the washed poha in water for 1 minute and then pour this into the cooking mixture after draining out the water.
Let it cook and after 2 minutes, turn off the heat
Top it up the roasted peanuts and any Bhujia of your choice.
Season this with lemon juice and chopped coriander leaves
