Sago Pudding (Sabudana Kheer)

In India we celebrate the month of Shravan which is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

10th of July, 2017 marks the start of Shravan month, observed as the 1st day of Shravan month as well as 1st day of ShravanSomvar Vrat

Shravan Somvar Vrat will be observed on every Monday till 7th August which will be the last day of Shravan Month.This entire month is dedicated to Lord Shiva🙏 and is very auspicious for LordShiva Devotees and many ladies and unmarried girls observes fast either for the entire month or atleast on every Monday which falls during this period.

Many devotees pledge not to eat any grain and salt during the somvar vrat.

Sago (Sabudana) is a staple diet for people who are fasting during the Shravan Mondays and one of the most famous recipe cooked from this Sagoo is Sagoo Kheer -This is a dessert which involves slow cooking of Sabudana in milk and jaggery.
Sagoo is easy to digest and jaggery is considered the purest form of sweetener .You can replace this with Honey but the taste of jagerry is relish.

Recipe for Sago Pudding (Sabudana Kheer)

Servings -2
Time to Cook -30 minutes

Jaggery – 125 gm
Milk -1 L
Sabudana or Sago- 150 gm

In order to make this kheer you have to soak Sabudana in room temperature water for 6-7 hours.This will make it soft and easy to cook.If you are using small Sabudana then you have to soak it for two hours only.


Method :
In a skillet or earthern pot -pour milk and let it boil on low heat.

When it starts boiling add the soaked and washed Sabudana in this


Stir this and cook this on low flame.This cooking requires frequent stirring so that sago doesn’t sticks at the bottom and they are cooked evenly

You can check after 20 minutes if it it cooked or not.It will melt between your fingers if cooked completely.


When it’s almost cooked add the crushed jaggery to this and give it a quick mix.You will see the melting of jaggery will give a new colur to the entire mixture.Turn off the heat.


It’s amazing when the mixture turning to Reddish Brown from White within few Seconds.Mix well and let this cool for 10 minutes. Garnish this with chopped dry fruits and serve .
